Happy Rainy Sunday. le sigh.. But anywho yesterday I ran with a group of black women who all share the interest in getting fit and breaking the stereotype that black women don’t run. I don’t know if you all have heard of Black Girls Run (BGR) but here is their back story from their site:
n 2009, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks created Black Girls RUN! in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight. BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
So I was ecstatic when my mother told me that their is a group of women who were trying to create a Black Girls Run Pittsburgh chapter and they were having an inaugural run this passing Saturday. So of course we joined and WE DID AMAZING. The goal was to run three miles but you were welcomed to run more or less. We ran 4 miles, a first for me, and in under an hour. AMAZING right? I was shocked that I did it. Of course I’m facing soreness today but that soreness is a great reminder that I set a goal and smashed it.
So with that being said, I’ve set a new goal for myself and that is to register and complete a 5k here in Pittsburgh, in the fall. I’m beyond excited and pumped to get back to training. I’ve been sick this past week with both a virus and seasonal allergies and lets just say this little gym rat wasn’t too happy. But my body got the rest it needed and I’m eager to get back to my training for both Miami and the 5k.
